CHARLIE MCALISTER  ”CREOSOTE” – 1 SIDED LP (UNREAD)

“Following on the heels of charlies last slab of vinyl “death water estates” (catsup plate) which collected previously released material from various mid-90’s cassettes, comes a new offering of anti-suburban bog tunes for banjo, guitar, violin, air organ, buckets and cans. twelve songs rattled out in true pysch-dixie fashion and sprayed with grease. “creosote” brings forth a return to the song, played from instruments handmade or long decayed. a definite clincher.”

FOOT OX  ”IT’S LIKE OUR LITTLE MACHIE” – LP (DISTANT COLONY)

This, my friends is by far my favorite record of 2008 thus far, and is a must have for sure. This is Teague Cullen’s third full length, but the first to be released in LP form. He is accompanied by a variety of various musicians throughout the record, filling out his odd pop songs to the fullest extent. Catchier than ever, this record has you on your seat until the very end. It’s circus freak, loner, pop songs that will give you goose bumps like no other. GOWNS  ”RED STATE”  - LP (KILL SHAMAN)

“Gowns sketch out a vision of what the future of the rock band could be.  Their over-the-counter psychedelia draws no lines between acoustic guitars and feedbacked pianos, processed spazzoid drum flails and a cappella harmonies.  For the past two years, former Mae Shi vocalist/gunk programmer Ezra Buchla and Amps for Christ guitar-wailer Erika Anderson have brought to the American West Coast a fertile marriage of eerie folk murmur and crushed, twisted electronics. With percussionist Corey Fogel, the sound conjured by Gowns is a digitally ruptured, gospel valentine to the heartlands. Recorded at home, in bedrooms and basements from rural South Dakota to Los Angeles, Red State tells the story of life lived in the flyover zones. Comes on transparent gold vinyl, with pro-printed covers.”

Jeff Witscher returns with some more abuse on this fantastic split with Lazy Magnet. It was released on his own, super under the radar label: Callow God, where the releases are often out of print before you hear about them. Keeping up with this man is a task all in it’s own, through all his traveling, name changing, and releasing on things on tons of various labels all around the world. He rages and lives out the scum noise dream harder than anyone I’ve ever met and is in a way, a hero of mine. This 7″ comes with a full color cover and two, large, color inserts. Whitman gives you a psychedelic jam on how to make Riverside the ideal homeland utilizing fireflies as well as a cover of a song by I.E., stripping this club song down to ukulele and percussive noise. The Treasure Mammal side on the other hand brings a jazzy, electronic life lesson, and karma-tic Casio ballad. ANDREW JACKSON JIHAD / FLASPAR / GOLDEN BOOTS – 3 WAY SPLIT CD (NIGHTPASS)

This 3 way split by some amazing bands from the Southwest is, in my humble opinion, one of the greatest things this label has ever been associated with. Hailing from Tucson, Las Vegas and Phoenix, all three groups produce next level pop music that is strange, beautiful and eminently listenable. Flaspar drops psychedelic dance pop that latches onto a deep groove and pummels you with extracurricular orbital effects direct from Ra himself. Andrew Jackson Jihad melds together feelings of pain, beauty and joy all with a wry, at times brutal, comic touch while affecting some bluegrass breakdowns. Golden Boots writes mind bending free-association pop songs with serious studio wizardry, horns and spirit. This is the first manufactured CD release from Nightpass, and hopefully it will set the standard we’ll live by. All said, that’s a high bar because I freaking love this CD. Its strengths are manifold; quality songwriting, musicianship, and yes, even a highly developed pop sensibility, which recalls everything from Neutral Milk Hotel to the Beatles to Talking Heads.

NICK EYMANN / TEAGUE CULLEN – CASSETTE (DISTANT COLONY)

Nick Eymann’s (better known as Children’s Crusade) side of this cassette blew me away the first time I heard it. It caught me off guard a little at first, for it i nothing like what you might be used to seeing him do live, but instead it is a collage of filed recordings strung together with piano and other various background noise. It almost comes of as a film score in some senses, but as a whole is absolutely breathtaking. Teague Cullen (better known as Foot Ox) on the other hand, stays a little closer to the sounds you are familiar with, only this cassette tends to lean more toward instrumentals than songs themselves. Playful and sad, fantastic, as always. Comes packaged in full-color artwork with a photograph of the two as kids and is dubbed on white cassetted, decorated with marker.

SECRET ABUSE “VIOLENT NARCISSUS” (NOT NOT FUN) - ONLY TWO LEFT

“Secret Abuser Jeff Witscher is an enigma wrapped in a riddle rolled in cassette tape and plugged into a battered pair of towering PA speakers. He’s lived everywhere, met everyone, and inspired legions through his loner lifestyle, utopian fashions (“refugee chic”), and spellbindingly intense music. Up from Rainbow Blanket, through to Impregnable, and across the arid plains of Roman Torment and Deep Jew, Witscher’s maintained a singularity of vision and total commitment to execution that has wrecked us, personally, to the point of speechlessness at least a dozen times. But, despite his restlessly shapeshifting spirit, the past year plus has seen him settling ever deeper into his Secret Abuse sinkhole mode, and here’s hoping he lingers a while longer, cause it’s a fucking winner. Brutal, pensive, blown-out tones crossfade into tortured minor key guitar laments before being slowly subsumed in a droning ocean of choked vocals and sulking, selfish electronics. Repressed, burning, and emotional as only a young man pushing away everything can be,Violent Narcissus is as definitive a document as has thus far yet emerged from the SA canon (and lord knows there’s been a grip of gems). Look long and hard; the mirror is a bitter mistress. Black LPs, mastered by Bill Hutson, housed in jackets designed by Witscher. Edition of 445.”

“Can one grow old gracefully with a name like Child Pornography? Apparently, yes. On this 3rd full length, She’s Got Legs, the youthful perkiness that has always characterized this band is not lost. Left behind though is the lo-fi buzz and hum. With clarity as a weapon, Child Pornography drive decisive guitar slices through epileptic beats for the most memorable autism-pop you’ve yet to hear. This evolution in sound is not a change to maturity, but just a refining of how much yappering, melo-drama, and exclamation a band can really stuff into the sound known as ROCK. Don’t call them electroclash or nu-rave or whatever. These guys are the Rolling Stones of YOURgeneration, so get struttin.”

GOD WILLING / PRIVY SEALS – LP (ARBOR) – OOP! - ONLY ONE LEFT

“God Willing and Privy Seals are two of the prime purveyors of meditative harsh tones. God Willing’s guitar and oscillatior drone has been reaching epic levels of hypnosis lately and this piece is a great example. The repetitive nature of textured signals act like the swaying charm of the pocket watch: onward march. Matthew Sullivan has been crafting his Earn project recently, and this, one of the final Privy Seals recordings acts as a logical bridge. Heavy, hi-end guitar and tape interlacing: a harsh movement, but possessing transcendently soothing qualities buried under the deprivation of distorted tones. At the end of the hallway a door lies open. A long overdue document of the LA Diaspora. In an edition of 300 LPs with silkscreened chipboard covers by Ren Schofield. ”

MICEMEAT OR TENSPEED “ALL CRITTERS” – LP (DEATHBOMB ARC) -ONLY ONE LEFT

“One day, young Davey Harms wanted to make some techno music. But unlike every other red-blooded American boy, he had no drummachine, no sampler, no sequencer, and not even a computer. Despite being such a deprived little punk, Davey was resourceful and so he looked around his room for something else that he could make some beats out of. Gathering up all his guitar pedals and a mixer, he asked himself, “Can I make accessible beat driven music with a rock n’ roll edge using just these fx pedals?” Any gear nerd would have told him that this is impossible, because guitar pedals need some sort of source sound in order to work. But Davey was also deprived of friendship at this point in his life, so no one like that was there, and instead he defied such unknown expectations and assembled all his guitar toys into what is essentially a synth circuit the wrangles mixer-feedback into fierce rhythms. In other words, this is the cyberpunk dream come true. You know, those movies in the 90s that depicted snot-nosed teens “hacking” into common everyday electronics and making them do incredible things like steal all the money out of the US treasury. Technology transcended and turned into pure magic. That is exactly what Davey did. And thus MINCEMEAT OR TENSPEED was born.
Now it is many years later, andMINCEMEAT OR TENSPEED has explored and mastered the vast possibilities of this guitar-pedal synth set up. He also has many friends now. Adult mother-fucking friends that know what’s what and think thatMINCEMEAT OR TENSPEED is the most fascinating music being made. Friends like Dan Deacon who recently named MINCEMEAT OR TENSPEEDone of the best acts of 2007 in a recent Pitchfork pole. Friends that understand that “Party Like a Rock Star” and Justice’s techno-rock are just beat songs about rock n’ roll, while MINCEMEAT OR TENSPEED is beats born from a perfect marriage of rock n’ roll and techno. Friends that have seen how far this pedal-synth setup has come. That now it is capable of much more than insane aggressive beats, but can also manifest beautiful melodies and emulate so many tones and timbres that you ask yourself, “Is that a banjo inside of his Big Muff or is he just happy to play Someone’s in the Kitchen With Dinah for me?” So, with this awesomely honed powers, and with powerfully awesome friends like that, it is only natural that the first MINCEMEAT OR TENSPEEDalbum has been born. Lifted on high by a trinity of record labels, this 12” will instantly show you the new world of sounds that shall move your feat, expand your mind, and get you really fucking high. This is magic on a plate. So rub it with a needle and remember the boy
who grew like a seed into a Manthing that now everyone is good friends with. The feel good hit of 2008!”

Like venturing into an audio jungle full of calm musical clearings preceded by dense sound overgrowth. Micose and the Mau Maus is an extraterrestrial interpretation of sound, the familiar running astride with the completely foreign.
